Re: Lithium Ion and Lithium Metal Batteries Handling in 2016

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation for flight safety.
The regulations on lithium batteries in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations 57th edition (effective from January 1, 2016) will be amended. To ensure flight safety and smooth handling, we summarized important changes for easy understanding.

  • 1) Revised item:
    ・Packing Instruction 967 SectionⅡ
    ・Packing Instruction 970 SectionⅡ
  • 2) IATA DGR 57th Revision and NCA handling policy for IATA DGR 57th

    IATA DGR 56th Edition IATA DGR 57th Edition NCA handling policy for IATA DGR 57th edition
    Each package containing more than four cells or more than two batteries installed in equipment must be labeled with lithium battery handling label, except for button cell batteries installed in equipment Lithium battery handling label must be attached to all package. This requirement will be exempted if below requirement is satisfied.
    • ①. Packages containing only button cell batteries installed in equipment
    • ②. Consignment of two packages or less where each package contains no more than four cells or two batteries installed in equipment

    Note: consignment of more than two packages may continue to move without the lithium battery handling label until 31 December.

    Lithium battery handling label must be attached to all package. This requirement will be exempted if below requirement is satisfied.

    • ①. Packages containing only button cell batteries installed in equipment
    • ②. Consignment (House Airway bill or Master Airway bill for straight shipment) of two packages or less where each package contains no more than four cells or two batteries installed in equipment

    Note: consignment of more than two packages may continue to move without the lithium battery handling label until 31 December.

    *1: Please implement requirement ② as soon as possible
    *2: AWB requirement is also exempted if labeling requirement is exempted

If there is a difference between these summaries and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations prevail. Therefore, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations must be observed when you handle lithium batteries.
